Roughneck is the next low-end job on offshore oil rigs after the lowest role of a roustabout. Roughnecks work on rig floor machinery and in the mud room. They will assemble and dismantle the various pipes and drills, collect core samples, and maintain the drilling equipment. Roughnecks report to the motorhand, and assist him wherever necessary. As for the Motorhand, motorhands are responsible for the engines, drilling equipment and any other motorized machines onboard the rig. Motorhands inspect, maintain and assure the proper function of these tools, and are also responsible for identifying broken parts and ordering new parts as a replacement. Motorhands are in charge of the roughnecks and roustabouts, and report to the derrick hand and drillers.
